Females lead in participation and creative output across various social media platforms
Young women are increasingly leading the way in social media engagement, reshaping the digital landscape. Research conducted by strategy agency Kids Industries indicates that 45% of girls actively participate in social media, compared to 37% of boys. This trend is especially evident on platforms like TikTok, where 58% of active users are girls.
The study also highlights that girls excel in creative expression, producing more fan art, videos, and fiction. However, boys dominate the gaming sphere, with 84% regularly participating, influenced in part by higher console ownership rates.
YouTube remains the preferred video platform for both genders, with 57% of boys and 39% of girls favoring it. TikTok follows closely behind, particularly popular among girls (28%) compared to boys (11%).
Girls are emerging as leaders, driving forward with remarkable creativity, a penchant for puzzles, and a fervor for crafting fan art. They are truly shaping the future of online interaction and creative expression, reaffirming their status as pioneers of fan creativity.
The report also highlights that girls’ interests in fandom are closely linked to social media, music icons, and creative pursuits, whereas boys’ fandom predominantly revolves around gaming (26% of boys compared to 8% of girls).
Cartoons or animated shows emerge as the most preferred fandom for girls (18%), followed by musicians or bands (16% for girls versus 1% for boys).”
